5 Types of Adjectives

Adjectives, Types of Adjectives

1. Adjectives of Quality :-

It describes the noun or pronoun. Means it gives information about quality or what sort of noun or pronoun is.

For example: 
  1. John is a clever boy.
  2. It is a golden opportunity.
  3. The food wad delicious.

2. Adjectives of Quantity:-

It describes quantity of things but not in numbers. (How Much?)

For example:  
  1. They got some information from internet
  2. He has enough knowledge.

3. Adjectives of Number:-

It describes things in number. (How many?)

For example: 
  1. Cricket team has eleven players
  2. Today is the first day of her school.

Sub-types of adjectives of Number

  • There are three sub types of adjectives of Number.

a. Definite Numeral adjectives: - Describes accurate number.

  • Cardinals - One, Two, Three, Four,.............(How Many?)
  • Ordinals - First, Second, Third, Fourth........(In what order?)

b. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives:- Describes approximate number.

e.g. All, Some, Many, No, Few, Several, Most, etc.

c. Distributive Numeral Adjective: - Describes each person or thing.

For example: 
  1. Every person should follow traffic rules.
  2. Each student has completed homework.

4. Demonstrative adjectives :-

These adjectives demonstrate the person or thing.

For example:  
  1. This book is more useful than that book.
  2. Such persons are dangerous.

5. Interrogative adjectives:-

These are questioning words functioning as Adjectives.

For example: 
  1. Whose book is this?
  2. What kind of man is he?

Use of adjectives :

By using adjective you can tell
  1. Number : e.g. One, First, Few, Some, Any, etc.
  2. Opinion : e.g. Tasty, Nice, Excellent, Wonderful, Marvelous, Easy, Beautiful, etc.
  3. Size : e.g. Big, Small, Gigantic, Thick, Long, etc.
  4. Age : e.g. Old, Young, New, Ancient, Childish, Youthful, etc.
  5. Shape : e.g. Round, Square, Triangular, Spherical, Circular, Oval, Flat, etc.
  6. Color : e.g. Green, Orange, Purple, Whitish, Blackish, etc.
  7. Origin : e.g. American, British, Spanish, European, Indian, etc.
  8. Material : e.g. Metallic, Wooden, Woolen, Silk, Cotton, etc.
  9. Purpose : e.g. Standing, Holding, Carrying, Laughing, etc.
Adjectives are like the enchanting palette of colors that a painter uses to create beautiful masterpieces.
